The Anasazi and Pueblo Indians

Anasazi: Meaning "the ancient ones," this name derives from a Navajo Indian word.

A people rich in culture, the 7,000-year-old Anasazi are the ancestors of today's Pueblo Indians. During their long history, the Anasazi evolved from a nomadic to a sedentary culture and existence. At first hunter-gatherers, in time the Anasazi began raising maize and other crops. They also produced skillfully woven baskets. By 700 AD, the Anasazi were building pueblos, or villages, along with extraordinary pottery marked by elaborate black-on-white designs. Their villages, built at the top of mesas or in hollowed-out natural caves at the base of canyons, included multiple-room dwellings and complex apartment structures of stone or adobe masonry.

No one really knows what happened to the Anasazi Indians. Toward the end of the Anasazi period they built and moved into the famous cliff houses which seem to provide great defensive capabilities, and yet there is little or no evidence of violent conflict. Abruptly around 1300 AD, following several years of severe drought, the Anasazi seem to have abandoned their cliff house dwellings and dispersed. The general consensus seems to be that their agrarian way of life had led to a population explosion, which coupled with poor farming methods had depleted the soil and other resources, just as a drought led to reduced harvests. As a result, the Anasazi left their cliff homes and moved to new territories, probably along the Rio Grande and on the Hopi mesas. Under this interpretation today, current Pueblo Indians are descendants of the Anasazi and still live largely traditional lives in the American Southwest, farming the land, weaving baskets, and making pottery.

Anasazi Family Dental has been in our location for many more years than we have been here...the name came with the office when Dr. Joseph Mikulicz acquired the practice. Since then, many of you have asked about our unusual name, and we are happy to share their ancient story.
